RE: carrying 2-14ft kayaks

We don't have kayaks but many times have 2 16.5' canoes. See my photo. I use the Yakima system and it works great. As a note, we meet a couple from Canada that picked up a pair of inflatable kayaks in Wisconsin (the manf. ??). They were extremely tight and fast. they said they tracked almost as well as their old sea kayaks. Good Luck

RE: Fridge wont light at high altitudes

Thanks for the your posts. I have and do blow out the ignition system and vent tubes. That was the first recommendation I received from an RV repair guy. I have had 2 trailers and neither had this problem. I'll keep looking.

Fridge wont light at high altitudes

Has anyone else run across this problem? Our fridge works great except it wont relight when we are above 6500 feet. I can go out and manually light it but it blows itself out with out the extra flame from a lighter. we had a guy check it and readjust it but we live at 1100 feet.

RE: Stupid Tire Question

I had only 5" of clearance so I "flipped" my axles. Now I have about 9 and a lot more clearance under the 5er.

RE: Fairview Campground on the Kern River

We have been rafting the Kern for more than 20 years. There are a number of campgrounds below Fairview. Fairview has been our choice when we dry camp due to it's location on the river for rafting. Some of the others have more trees that you can get under. I believe Hospital Flats has some large sites. If you dry camp and are self contained you can camp along the river in several spots.

RE: Towing through California

We do have a 55 mph limit but going with traffic speed sometimes is safer. I have never received a ticket for going with traffic at 65 and I don't know anyone that has. I usually set the cruise at 62 and relax when I get out on th open highways. Hope you enjoy Cal. There are many great spots.

RE: Canoe Carrier

My pic only shows one canoe but on the same trip I had 2 canoes side by side. Or I have 2 bikes and one canoe.

RE: Maiden Voyage

I think you'll love the size of your 5er. Not too big but plenty of room. That is a great looking rig. Have fun and good luck.

RE: First Time Traveler

There is some great advise here. RVing is suppose to be fun. I enjoy the drive almost as much as the destination when I haven't been in the area. You should have plenty of power to run the hills and pass if you need to so sit back and enjoy the trip. On our long summer trips (6-10 weeks) I can drive 8-10 hours once I am in driving shape. This usually takes 3-4 days. But I don't like to drive that long more than 2 days in a row. We usually look for something 5-6 hours out if we are moving cross country and then enjoy the late afternoon and evening (usually canoeing for 1-2 hours). Sometimes we find a great location early in the day and stop. Except for California we never have problems getting into campgrounds. We usually calculate where we will be and call ahead if possible to see if there is space. Enjoy

RE: 6v versus 12v batteries

I ran with 2 12V for many years. We do a lot of dry camping. If we were good we could last for 4-5 days. When we moved up to a 5th wheel (and got older)we wanted more power and didn't want to worry about time. We changed over to 2 6V and can go 4-5 with a larger rig and more power usage. The 6V also last longer.

RE: transporting 2 -- 14' kayaks with a 5th wheel

Check out our unit. We travel with one or 2 16.6' canoes. Or We travel with one canoe and 2 bikes. It is a Yakma rake system. We have carried canoes with a trailer on a Tahoe and Suburban prior to this setup. This is the most secure system we have used. The canoes really don't interfere with vision. Kayaks would sit higher out of view than the canoes.

RE: Newbie: Does a heavier 5er do better in cross winds?

I don't believe you will notice a big difference between the two. As everyone says 5ers are stable. I have been in winds where at 55-65 mph I was being pushed and did a lot of swaying like our trailer. When I dropped to 40 mph I gained control again. But those were the gusty winds of the So. Calif. desert. They can be very nasty. If I had been in my trailer I would have stopped.

RE: Buying new 5er

From your list the Carriage is the one with the best construction. It will probably be the heaviest also. The others can be fine rigs it just depends how you are going to use it and as others have said floorplan is extremely important. Good luck on your quest.

RE: Tire Question

LIJohnnyH that sounds like a great rig I wish you the best. If the company wont deal then you only have one choice, live with them or not. You just paid a pretty penny for your rig. I would dump the tires and put on good ones to start with. The unanswerable question is how long will the low grade tires last. All you need to do is run them one day to long and you may not have a nice rig any more. When we purchased our Compass we got a great deal on it because it was a dealer repo. Tires were brand new in looks but 3 years old by the date stamp and probably sat for two years. The first thing I did was put new tires on it. It really hurt to do it but I know that was the smart thing to do.

RE: stabilizing 5er

If you check old threads many people use JT's and Roto Chocks. The combination works great.

RE: Retail price of my unit

If you go to a reputable dealer they can show you the books. The RV industry isn't quite as clean cut on values as the auto industry but they do have books. We purchased a 2005 Compass 30RLS just like yours from a dealer that picked it up on a dealer repo. They showed us all the figures they were looking at.

RE: Ladder Bike Rack

I have carried 2 bikes on my ladder for short distances (150 miles round trip). Even taking care to secure so they don't wiggle and bounce 2 or 3 bikes puts a lot of pressure on a few light screws. Have you thought of putting a receiver on the front of your truck. We use ours for a canoe goal post but you could use it for bikes.

RE: Maxxis- 205/75/15c tires

I have been swearing by Maxxis for over 4 years. For the money they are great tires. I know the new thing is to go to LT so the next time (hopefully 3-4 years) I'll do some research on the subject. In the mean time i love my tires.

RE: Carriage Lite

We pull a 30' Compass with our 2007 GMC 2500 Duramax. I really question the ability to tow a 36'. I dido the warranty. We purchased a new (but dealer repo) and Carriage wont discuss anything with me. They wont even send me an owner's manual. We love the unit but I question company's stance.

RE: Chev-Trailer Brake -Jumper Harness- Under Dash???

I have a 2007 Sierra Classic. Even though it is GMC I am sure it is the same. There was a harness in the glove compartment. Is it the 2008's that have the built-in trailer brakes?
